When Duncan returns, who is close to Paul, he tells him about his fears, but Duncan assures him that he has known the people of the desert and their customs and went to their village and became close to them.
Paul discusses with his father Leto the idea of traveling to the desert planet, but Leto assures his son that he needs him by his side, and tells him how the Emperor is trying to set up a conflict between the Atreides and the Harconnins, and that this conflict will weaken his power in favor of the Emperor.
Duke Leto intends to make an alliance with the people of the desert instead of taking spices by force as the Harkonin did, to take advantage of their desert strength in order to thwart the Emperor's plan, and tells his son that he is preparing him to be his heir and successor.
Before leaving, Jessert's chief priest, Jessica, and mother, Gaius Helen Mohiam, arrives at Caladan for a urine test, because his mother and her superiors think he will be the chosen one, according to the prophecy of the Benny Jessert organization.
Before Paul meets the priest, his father's doctor, Seok Walton Yeoh, warns him that Priest Mohiam has a special agenda. to become the chosen one.
When Paul asks his mother what Mohiam said, she tells him that the organization has spent hundreds of years in a selective breeding program for the sons of great families to produce a mind like no other, that can see the past and the future, and that Benny Gesert's powers are greater than he thinks they run the galaxy in secret.
The Duke travels with his family and army to the desert planet, and when they land on the planet, the inhabitants of the planet chant the phrase “the sound from the outside world” and Jessica tells her son that this is the prophecy and that the locals believe he is the chosen one.
The Duke tries directly to communicate with the chief of the local residents "Stigler" through Officer Duncan Idaho, to tell them that he wants mutual benefit, and Leto knows that the desert dwellers "Freemen" live in caves in communities called sich and that their numbers are much greater than the leader of the Harkonnen soldiers believed.
Leto knows that the Freemen have devised ways to help them live on this planet, including suits that recycle the water lost from their bodies. They also learned ways to walk through the sand to mislead the desert worm, which is one of the most dangerous creatures on the planet, and invented tools to confuse it.
He goes to explore the mining sites for spices, only to discover that the Harconians have left him dilapidated equipment and that he may not be able to gather the required quantities of spices.
During the journey, a drilling rig attacks a giant desert worm that creeps out from under the sand to devour the stomach, but before it arrives, Leto rescues her crew and orders them to leave the load of spices they have collected to save them.
Once Duke Leto and his men fall asleep, the Harkonnen, together with Emperor Sardokar's forces, attack the planet Atreides, and kill the Duke's men, who discover that his doctor has betrayed him, but the doctor tells him that he has to do so because they are holding his wife hostage, and promises to help Paul escape.
He puts in the Duke's mouth a capsule that releases poisonous gas and asks him to use it when the Baron meets the head of the Harkonens in order to kill him, and indeed he uses it, but the Baron's doctors succeed in saving him from death.
As for Paul and his mother, they can escape with difficulty and eventually reach the villages of Freeman, who refuse to help them in the end, but they receive them after Paul fights and kills one of them, and meets Chaney, whom he saw in his dreams for the first time, then he and his mother go with them.
